  10.       IMPORTANT:  If you have registered your copy of PF2, your
  11.       registration number is on the shipping label of the package that
  12.       PF2 was mailed to you in. You will need to enter it when you
  13.       first start PF2 Version 4.03.
  14.  
  15.  
  16.       UPGRADE NOTICE: This version of PF2 has a new tax code table. If you
  17.       plan to export your tax data to TurboTax, TaxCut, etc. you must load
  18.       the new table at install time. It is also highly recommended that you
  19.       read the chapter in the user's guide on the new tax facilities and on
  20.       converting your existing codes to the new ones.

  23.       SHAREWARE DISTRIBUTORS AND BBS SYSOPs:
  24.       Please read the file VENDOR.DOC for important suggestions on how
  25.       to best package PF2 for re-distribution via various media.
  26.  
  27.  
  28.       HARDWARE\SOFTWARE REQUIRED:
  29.  
  30.       PF2 runs under IBM or MS DOS 3.1 or later, and OS/2 or MicroSoft
  31.       Windows as a DOS program. The hardware required is:
  32.  
  33.       1.   Any PC or PS/2 compatible computer.
  34.  
  35.       2.   The computer must have 450KB of main storage available for
  36.            application programs after operating system requirements
  37.            have been satisfied.
  38.  
  39.       3.   A fixed disk with at least 2MEGs of space available is
  40.            required to use PF2. 3.5MEGs are required to install the
  41.            system initially.
  42.  
  43.       4.   A printer on a parallel port if reports or checks are to be
  44.            printed.
  45.  
  46.  
  47.       INSTALLATION:
  48.  
  49.       If you have received PF2 on diskettes, skip to install-part 2. If
  50.       you have down loaded PF2 from a BBS or the IBM PC Tools disk you
  51.       must first do the following:
  52.  
  53.       1.   When you have received PF2 electronically, it is packed into
  54.            one or more files using  PKZIP(r) by Pkware, Inc. You must
  55.            obtain a copy of PKUNZIP.EXE to unpack the file. Most BBS's
  56.            disk have copies of PKUNZIP available for down loading.
  57.  
  58.       2.   To unpack PF2 into the directory to which you down loaded
  59.            it, make that directory the default directory. If you
  60.            received a single file, then at the DOS prompt enter the
  61.            command:
  62.  
  63.                                   PKUNZIP  PF2.ZIP
  64.  
  65.       otherwise enter:
  66.  
  67.                                 PKUNZIP  PF2_XX_?.ZIP
  68.  
  69.       for each file received where ? is the file letter (A, B, or C) and
  70.       XX is the release id.
  71.  
  72.       3.   Unpacking the file(s) will result in the files: INSTALL.EXE,
  73.            DARCH.EXE, PF2READ.ME (any last minute information), FILE_ID.DIZ
  74.            (a short discription of PF2), VENDOR.DOC (an information file
  75.            for shareware distributors), LICENSE.DOC, and PF2.001 through
  76.            PF2.017. You are now ready to start with the actual installation.
  77.  
  78.       Installation, part 2:
  79.  
  80.       1.   IMPORTANT: Your CONFIG.SYS file must contain a FILES=20
  81.            statement. PF2 opens a large number of files at times and
  82.            the FILES statement sets the limit on the number that may be
  83.            open at any one time. It must be set to a value of at least
  84.            20.
  85.  
  86.       2.   If installing from diskette, place diskette #1 in your
  87.            diskette drive.
  88.  
  89.       3.   At the DOS prompt enter:  D:\PATH\INSTALL   where D is the
  90.            drive letter of the diskette or fixed drive you are
  91.            installing from and, if installing from a fixed disk, PATH
  92.            is the path to the directory containing the PF2 distribution
  93.            files. For example to install from diskette drive A, you
  94.            would enter:
  95.  
  96.                                   A:\INSTALL
  97.  
  98.            To install from the directory DOWNLOAD on fixed disk drive
  99.            C, you would enter:
  100.  
  101.                                   C:\DOWNLOAD\INSTALL
  102.  
  103.       4.   Answer the questions asked by the install program. Help is
  104.            provided on the lower half of the screen for each question
  105.            or option. When you are satisfied with the answers, press
  106.            F10.
  107.  
  108.       5.   If you are installing from diskettes and received more than
  109.            one diskette, the install program will instruct you when to
  110.            place the next diskette in the drive. After you have done
  111.            so, press any key except "Esc" to continue the install
  112.            process. If any problems are encountered during install, the
  113.            install program will notify you of the problem and what
  114.            actions to take.

  117.       STARTING PF2:
  118.  
  119.       To start PF2, you must be in the PF2 program directory. To get to
  120.       the directory assuming it is C:\PF2, enter at the DOS prompt the
  121.       following two commands:
  122.                                   C:
  123.                                   CD\PF2
  124.  
  125.       The first command makes the C drive the default drive if it is
  126.       not already. The second command makes \PF2 the default directory.
  127.       Then at the DOS prompt enter
  128.  
  129.                                   PF2  DATABASE
  130.  
  131.       where DATABASE is the path to the set of books you initially want
  132.       to open. The DATABASE parameter is optional. If it is not
  133.       included, PF2 will open/create the set of books in "MYBOOKS"
  134.       directory unless a set already exists in the PF2 program
  135.       directory; in which case they are opened. For a new install, it
  136.       is recommended that you start with the sample database and use it
  137.       as a learning tool. To start with the sample database enter:
  138.

  142.       HELP:
  143.  
  144.       PF2 provides extensive context sensitive help. If you have a
  145.       question about a menu item or an input field just press "F1" for
  146.       help. A window will appear which will explain the menu item or
  147.       input field. The more you use help, the quicker you will learn
  148.       the system.
  149.  
  150.  
  151.       USER'S GUIDE:
  152.  
  153.       The PF2 User's Guide is on-line. You access it by pressing Alt-F1
  154.       at any time. Once in the guide, you may print it by pressing F4.
  155.       The guide is about 70 pages long and covers all functions of the
  156.       program with a "how to" orientation. There is a hard copy
  157.       Reference manual with much greater detail that will be available
  158.       in Februry 1994 and will be priced at $35.00. You may order it
  159.       directly from Spitfire Software (Georgia residents please add
  160.       sales tax).

  163.       REGISTRATION:
  164.  
  165.       If you use PF2 productively, you must register your copy and pay
  166.       the license fee. The benefits of registering are:
  167.  
  168.       1.   You receive free support from Spitfire Software for both
  169.            application questions and problem resolution.
  170.  
  171.       2.   You receive the PF2 Newsletter periodically which contains
  172.            the latest information on PF2 including helpful hints,
  173.            future enhancements, and update information.
  174.  
  175.       3.   Discounts on future releases of the program.
  176.  
  177.       If you use PF2 illegally by not registering, you will not be able
  178.       to upgrade easily to future releases since PF2 will not migrate
  179.       your data.

  181.       To register, simply print out the registration instructions when
  182.       PF2 asks for your registration number. You may either mail in the
  183.       form with a check for the license fee to Spitfire Software or call
  184.       the listed 800 phone number and order by credit card. In return you
  185.       will receive the most current version of the system, your registration
  186.       number, and future mailings of the Newsletter. Non USA residents must
  187.       use a credit card or send US funds, a check drawn on a USA bank, or
  188.       an international money order.

  247.       UPDATE HISTORY:
  248.       Version 4.02e    This version has a number of enhancements and bug
  249.                        fixes. The major enhancements are:
  250.  
  251.                        1. Import of stock prices from Prodigy has been
  252.                        expanded to include more Prodigy file formats. Now
  253.                        supported are both old and new Quote Track
  254.                        formats, text or comma delimited with/without
  255.                        headings. Also the name and directory that was
  256.                        used to import price data is remembered between
  257.                        sessions.
  258.  
  259.                        2. The default set of books opened when PF2 is
  260.                        started when none is specified on the command line
  261.                        is now "MYBOOKS" unless a set exist in the PF2
  262.                        program directory.

  264.                        3. Automatic backup is now provided as an option
  265.                        whenever a set of books is closed such as when
  266.                        exiting PF2 or opening another set.
  267.  
  268.                        4. The number of user defined auto transactions
  269.                        has been increased from 17 to 34.

  271.                        The bug fixes are:
  272.  
  273.                        1. Import of stock data in the generic format now
  274.                        works correctly.
  275.  
  276.                        2. Error in creating the check print file when
  277.                        creating a new set of books has been corrected.

  279.       Version 4.02f    The enhancements in this version are:
  280.  
  281.                        1. Checking printing has been enhanced to support
  282.                        print immediate as well as print spooling. Print
  283.                        spooling has been further enhanced you allow the
  284.                        user to decide when the checks are to be sent to
  285.                        the printer.
  286.  
  287.                        2. Database backup has been enhanced to support
  288.                        mulitple levels of backup. When backing up to a
  289.                        fixed disk, PF2 saves the three most current
  290.                        backup files.
  291.  
  292.                        3. Batch transaction files may now be processed
  293.                        directly while in the enter transactions function.
  294.  
  295.                        Also all reported problems to-date have been fixed.

  297.       Version 4.02g    The enhancements in this version are:
  298.  
  299.                        1. You may now share accounts between 2 or more
  300.                        sets of books. For example, if you have a small
  301.                        business and your personal finances both under
  302.                        PF2 and you use your checking account for both but
  303.                        desire to keep the business and personal books
  304.                        separate, you may now do so.
  305.  
  306.                        2. When reconciling an account, the beginning
  307.                        and ending balance are displayed and dynamically
  308.                        updated as you mark transactions.
  309.  
  310.                        3. To improve the readability of PF2 panels, you
  311.                        you may now specify separate colors for the
  312.                        message and action key lines and for pick lists.
  313.  
  314.                        4. When using the topic index for the on-line
  315.                        user's guide, you may jump to the section beginning
  316.                        with a given sequence of charaters by entering those
  317.                        characters. This is in addition to the word/phrase
  318.                        search capability.

  320.                        Also all reported problems to-date have been fixed.

  322.       Version 4.02h    The enhancements in this version are:
  323.  
  324.                        1. The stock/mutual fund sell function has been
  325.                        significantly improved in the area of selling
  326.                        partial certificates.
  327.  
  328.                        2. The on-line user's guide now remembers where you
  329.                        were when exiting and starts at that page when next
  330.                        opened.
  331.  
  332.  
  333.       Version 4.02i    The enhancements in this version are:
  334.  
  335.                        1. The stock/mutual reinvestment function has been
  336.                        enhanced to support fund charges and transfer of
  337.                        funds from other mutual funds.
  338.  
  339.                        2. The on-line user's guide is now accessable at any
  340.                        time by pressing Alt-F1.
  341.  
  342.                        3. The bills function has been enhanced to support
  343.                        a cap on the amount paid on a bill with an associated
  344.                        credit account. This allows you to pay the bill in
  345.                        installments.
  346.  
  347.                        4. A number of minor usablility enhancements have been
  348.                        added.
  349.  
  350.       Version 4.02j    This is a maintenance release.
  351.  
  352.       Version 4.03     The enhancements in this version are:
  353.  
  354.                        1. Support for the industry standard .TXF tax
  355.                        information interchange file format has been added.
  356.                        This enables the user to directly transfer data
  357.                        from PF2 to many leading tax preperation programs
  358.                        such as TurboTax and TaxCut.
  359.  
  360.                        2. The tax data tracking facilities have been
  361.                        enhanced so that the vast majority of data needed
  362.                        at tax time is now available directly from PF2. This
  363.                        facility includes a new tax code table and facilities
  364.                        for converting your existing codes to the new codes.
  365.  
  366.                        3. Facilities for backing out stock/bond transactions
  367.                        have been added. This enables the user to more easily
  368.                        correct errors in stock transactions.
  369.
